Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns: The Romance and Sexual Sorcery of Sadomasochism
Screw the Roses enthusiastically covers all the basics and even some of the not-so-basics--bondage, negotiation, sex, endorphins, dominance and submission, toys, safety, S/M community, and beyond. It's written primarily from the point of view of male dominant/female submissive interactions, but it's easily translatable into valuable advice for any relationship configuration. Miller and Devon's explanations of not just the how, but also the why, of sadomasochism are honest, sexy, funny--and a must-have for anyone who wants to learn about sadism, masochism, dominance, submission, or bondage

Sensuous Magic 2 Ed: A Guide to S/M for Adventurous Couples
by Patrick Califia-Rice
Need help with your riding-crop technique? Wonder how to wrap your husband like a mummy? Or maybe you caught your girlfriend wistfully eyeing a pair of handcuffs in a shop window and simply want to know how to bring up the subject with her. Sensuous Magic has the answers. Writer, therapist, and sex radical Patrick Califia-Rice has updated his classic introduction to S/M and power play to embrace couples of all persuasions and at every stage of experience. Although not a comprehensive technical guide (you will need a book on rope bondage, for instance, if you want to learn appropriate knots and techniques), Califia-Rice's text offers insightful warnings, advice, and commentary, the kind of guidance you might expect from a seasoned mentor. It is especially well-suited to daring beginners, who can learn the basics on safety and communication, while being titillated by more advanced topics like whip selection and master/slave contracts.

The New Topping Book by Dossie Easton, Janet W. Hardy
Tens of thousands learned the emotional and ethical skills of BDSM topping from the first `Topping Book.` Now, in addition to the sage advice and good humor that made the first edition a classic, the authors tackle some of the issues that have come up for tops in the last six years: on-line domination, the challenges and rewards of `lifestyle` relationships, ensuring our own and our partners` safety, and more.

The New Bottoming Book by Janet W. Hardy, Dossie Easton
Almost a decade ago, the first `Bottoming Book` taught tens of thousands of people that bottoming - being a submissive, masochist, slave, `boy` or `girl,` or other BDSM recipient - is as much an art as topping. Since then, the growing popularity of BDSM, and the blossoming of the Internet as a source of information and connection, have created a whole new universe of possibilities for players. Now, the completely updated revised `New Bottoming Book` gives even more insights and ideas, updated for a new millennium, about how to be a successful, popular bottom! New sections on dominance/submission play, bridging the gap from on-line to real-time relationships, the four stages of a scene, and more. Plus, Fish`s hot illustrations of bottoms in action, many moving and funny anecdotes, and an extra-large helping of the realistic wisdom for which these authors are known.

The Ethical Slut: A Guide to Infinite Sexual Possibilities by Dossie Easton, Catherine A. Liszt
This newest volume from Dossie Easton and Catherine A. Liszt, the increasingly dynamic duo of modern sex guides, provides a whole new approach to self-help books because it chiefly concerns the task of getting you from where you are already to where -- ideally, anyway -- you already are. As the title claims, it's a handbook to teach the willing and the eager not just how to be sluts -- many sluts already have some kind of handle on that set of skills -- but how to be the best, most responsible slut you can be, and, therefore, how to have the most fun possible and wreak the least possible havoc being one.

Leatherman's Handbook II: The Sequel by Larry Townsend
The first edition of this book has recently been reprinted in a Silver Jubilee edition. The two editions differ substantially in two main respects: First, the scene reports differ, and many of the great scene reports in the second edition are famous and much imitated; Second, the second edition, and the Jubilee reprint of the first edition, contain improved safe sex information, which was not understood or available at the printing of the first edition (which was published before the AIDS epidemic materialized). The first edition was written from the perspective of the gay male Scene Community in the early 1970s (a community that was gradually evolving from Old to New Leather), and it finally made modern BDSM accessible to thousands of people who had no previous written resources. Though many BDSM books have followed since, it remains in a category of its own when it comes to conveying the heated, eye-opening emotional and physical depths possible in BDSM interactions. It intertwines explanations of activities and safety advice with fascinating, memorable (and often since imitated!) scene and relationship descriptions illustrating each activity or style.

The Loving Dominant by John Warren
A very comprehensive, accessible and well-written introduction to the scene for the novice, or any curious layperson, whether dominant or submissive in nature, or a little of both. I recommend The Loving Dominant highly to anyone wanting some down-to-earth information, from the curious acolyte to the not-quite-jaded adept.

Learning the Ropes: A Basic Guide to Safe and Fun S/m Lovemaking by Race Bannon, Guy Baldwin
The introduction to Learning the Ropes begins, "S/M has long been a much misunderstood style of erotic play." Race Bannon provides some much-appreciated accurate information in this honest and straightforward basic guide to S/M. He explodes prevalent myths about S/M and replaces them with a playground of erotic fantasy and an emphasis on consensuality. The fantasy visualization exercises and the examples of scenes and negotiation provide rich fodder for crafting new experiences, and regardless of your gender, orientation, or skill level, you'll find that the advice sprinkled throughout the book is useful. Possibly the most important trait of this book, though, is that it's delightfully devoid of the "This is the One True Way" trap evident in too many sexuality manuals.

The Master's Manual: A Handbook of Erotic Dominance by Jack Rinella
While much of the wisdom in The Master's Manual is gleaned from the gay leather scene, Rinella's honest and nonjudgmental writing is appropriate for people of any orientation who seek to learn more about the empowerment and ecstasy that can be found in leathersex. Each of the 40 pieces was written to stand alone, and they cover topics from how to become a master, why someone would want to, fiction and nonfiction leather classics and classics-to-be, contracts and commitments, how to deal with a scene gone wrong, and more. Taken together, they combine to form a picture of a world where "we can live our fantasies and face our fears. The real self can emerge from behind the mask of culture."
